Presidents Foreword

Sri Lanka Squash federation, formed in mid 1981 did launch a website in the year 2006. How ever, it has come to a stage where the SLSF is required to re launch another website due to reasons perhaps beyond its control.

I am happy that a professional group has willingly come forward to design, launch and last but not the least to maintain it with regular updates, which is the crux of the success story of any site, where the Squash fraternity would be able to gain knowledge of activities instantly!

Sri Lankan Squash is still at its formative stage & it’s yet to make its presence felt ‘on court’ at the international stage! It can definitely boast of having hosted Asian championships with extreme success ‘second to none’ but the proof of the pudding will only come when a Sri Lankan wins either at Asian or even at South Asian level individual medal!

We know what to do!
Players know what to do!
There is no rocket science in it!
Let’s get together & do it!
That day, is not far away!

History & Beginning of Squash in Sri Lanka

The Sri Lanka Squash Federation which was established in early part of 1981, now steps in to near completion of three decades of active involvement in promoting & regulating the Game of Squash in Sri Lanka. It is recorded in the Indian Squash history that the first Squash courts were built at the ‘Calcutta Racket Club’. With Ceylon,...

History of World Squash

For over 1000 years man has invented and enjoyed a variety of games played by hitting a ball with either a closed fist - as in "fives"? or "bunch of fingers"? - or with some form of bat or racket. Around the year 1148 the French played "la Paume"?, meaning "the palm of the hand"?, which developed into Jeu de Paume, Real Tennis, Royal Tennis or, if you play the sport, simply Tennis. At sometime in the early 19th century this obsession with rackets and balls spawned another variety of the sport in the unlikely birthplace of the Fleet Prison in London. The prisoners in "The Fleet"?, mainly debtors, took their exercise by hitting a ball against walls, of which there were many, with rackets and so started the game of "Rackets"?. Rackets progressed, by some strange route, to Harrow and other select English schools about 1820 and it was from this source that our own sport of Squash, or Squash Rackets, developed.
